The Siberian Express should live up to its name this weekend. The temps look like they’ll be pleasant, but it will be a snowy trail! See you there.
The Fit List will appear sporadically during the next month or so, depending on the race calendar. I’ll update for February races. In the meantime, here’s the list for January weekends:
Weekend of Jan. 4-5:
— Siberian Express
This is a great 7.45-mile trail run at Kickapoo State Recreation Area, always on the first Saturday in January — and it always happens, no matter what the weather. It’s Saturday, followed by a party in Danville. Here’s the race form. Online registration is closed but you can register race day.
Weekend of Jan. 11-12:
— Illinois Fat Ass 50
This run on Sunday, Jan. 12, is a 50K at McNabb. The run is on a 10-mile out-and-back course. Run as much or as little as you’d like. There’s no entry fee, and the run celebrates the 50th wedding anniversary of a couple of runners.
Here’s a link for more information.
— Polar Bear Dare
This is a 10K and 5K race and a 1-mile fun run on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Mill Creek Park near Marshall. The race is a fundraiser for the Clark County Park District Trails Coalition.
Here’s the park district’s web page about the race, here’s the race form and here’s the Facebook page for the race.
Weekend of Jan. 18-19:
— Chilly Chili Run
This is a Lake Run Club event on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Green Gables Bar and Grill at Lake Bloomington, near Hudson. It’s 4.37 miles, and there are awards not only for the fastest finishers but also the best-dressed and the least-dressed. There’s also all-you-can-eat chili and drinks at the finish.

Weekend of Jan. 25-26:
— Frosty 5K
This is a 5K race, plus a walk and a dog walk, on the Peoria Riverfront on Saturday, Jan. 25. Here’s a link for more information.
— Aon Step Up for Kids
This is a stair climb on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Aon Center (originally the Standard Oil Building) in Chicago. The climb is 80 floors, and it’s a fundraiser for family support services at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. There is an $80 minimum fundraising commitment in addition to the registration fee. You can register to climb as an individual or as part of a team. You can also choose a Half-Climb of 40 floors.
Here’s the website for more information.
Upcoming registration deadlines:
— UPD Swim Clinic
I’ve done this swim clinic, run by University Laboratory High School swim coaches, several times. It’s fun and I’ve learned a lot. It was at the pool at the UI’s Freer Gym in the past, but this year it’s an Urbana Park District program at the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center. It’s an 8-week course on Tuesday evenings, beginning Jan. 14. It’s not a learn to swim program, but one focused on improving your stroke and technique.
Here’s a link for more information. Registration deadline is Jan. 7, and as of Thursday at lunchtime, there were eight spots left.
— Clinton Lake Ultra
This race is three loops of a 10-mile trail at the Clinton Lake State Recreation Area on Saturday, March 29, 2014. The wooded trail is mostly single-track and hilly. Registration is open now through March 1, but the race usually fills before that. Here’s a link for registration.
