Weekend of March 15-16:
— Runnin of the Irish
This event includes 10K and 5K races on Saturday in Effingham. Your race entry also gets you a free beer after the race.

— St. Patrick’s Day 5K
This event includes a 5K race and 1-mile walk on Sunday in Bloomington. Go here for more information and a link to the race flier.
— Cactus Classic Trail Race
This is a 10K and a half marathon (both on courses that are slightly long) on Saturday at Sand Ridge State Forest near Manito, southwest of Peoria.

— Blarney Blitz
This 5K is on Saturday in Peoria Heights. Racers get a beer stein and a couple of beers or sodas and food at the post-race party. There are also two Dash4Cash events. One is a 75-meter sprint prior to the 5K, with $50 cash each to the male and female winners. There’s also a First to the Flag award of $50 cash to the male and female runners who are first to a flag that will be placed in the first half of the race course. If the First to the Flag winners are also the overall male and female winners, they’ll get $100.

— Run to LSB
This race on Saturday in Decatur is about 2 miles long, and it leads the St. Patrick’s Day parade through downtown. It ends at Lock, Stock and Barrel with a post-race party. There is no race day registration and there is a cap on the number of entrants (although the race flier doesn’t say how many entrants they’ll take). The race sells out every year, so enter early. The race organizers are taking race entries through March 8.

NOTE: The Heritage Music 5K that was scheduled for Saturday in Homer has been postponed due to logistical issues. It will be rescheduled, likely for late May or early June.
Weekend of March 22-23:
— Mountain Goat Hill Runs
This race on Saturday, March 22, is one of the Kennekuk Road Runners’ events, and the second in the club’s Grand Slam series. LOVE this hilly run. I haven’t been able to do it for several years, and I won’t make it this year either, but if you want to run some hills, you should be there. There are 15K and 10K runs and a 5K walk. As always with Kennekuk, the run is followed by a post-race party.

— Peoria Riverfront Museum Interplanetary 5K
This 5K is Saturday, March 22, at the Riverfront Museum in Peoria. There’s a 5K race, a 1-mile walk and a 1/2-mile kids’ fun run. The run is along the Riverfront Trail.

— Run for Annabelle
This is a 5K run/walk on Saturday, March 22, in Mount Pulaski. It is in memory of an infant who died from a brain tumor, and the race proceeds will benefit another infant born prematurely.

— The Tour of St. Louis Omnium
Bike racing season is starting. Here’s a race in St. Louis on Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23, that includes a Saturday morning time trial, a Saturday afternoon bike race in Forest Park and a Sunday criterium in Carondelet Park. There’s a category for riders who will compete in all three events.

Weekend of March 29-30:
— Penguin in the Park 5K
This 5K on Saturday, March 29, in Decatur, is John “The Penguin” Bingham’s namesake race. The author and “Competitor” magazine columnist attended Millikin University in Decatur, and he returns for the race. For more information, go to www.penguin5k.com.
— Clinton Lake Ultra
This is a 30-mile race on the trails at Clinton Lake on Saturday, May 29, and the first race in a new Central Illinois Ultras series. The race is full, but the race directors are still looking for volunteers. — Run for Hope 10K
This race is Sunday, March 10, in Bloomington. It is run along the Constitution Trail, and proceeds support Home Sweet Home Ministries. Click here for the race website.
— Run with a Mission
This is a 5K on Saturday, March 29, in Springfield. It’s sponsored by the South Side Christian Church and proceeds go toward building a school in a village in Kenya. There’s a kids fun run as well. For more information, go to www.southsidechristian.com/5k/.
— Reflections of the Riot
This 5K race and 2-mile fun walk on Saturday, March 29, in Charleston is part of “Charleston Riot Days” — that city’s three-day celebration of the 150th anniversary of a riot between Union soldiers and those opposed to the Civil War. — Redskin Nation Tomahawk Trot
This is a 5K and 10K on Saturday, March 29, in Momence, sponsored by the Momence Athletic Booster Club. Click here for more information and a link to the race flier.
— Allerton Trail Half Marathon
This will be the second year for this race at Allerton Park near Monticello. There’s a half marathon and 10K on Saturday, April 5, and the new Trail-Glo 5K on Friday night, April 4. All of the race proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. For more information, go to www.allertontrailshalfmarathon.com.
