This week’s weather has been AWESOME. Here’s hoping we can hang onto that for a few more days ... Here’s your list of races:
Weekend of July 19-20:
— Run for the Bagel
This race on Saturday in Mattoon includes a 10K run, 5K run, 5K walk and a 1-mile fun run. You can choose to be timed or not timed in the fun run. Click here for the race website for more information.
— Run to Inspire
This is a 5K and a 10K race on Saturday in Urbana. There’s also a 1-mile fun run for kids under age 12. The event is organized by Stone Creek Church, and proceeds will go to the Inspire Urbana Initiative which, among other things, will help Prairie Elementary School buy 10 Smart Boards and help launch a mentoring program at the school. — Fisherman’s Trail
This is a 7.5K trail run on Saturday at Comlara County Park near Hudson. Some of the race proceeds go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Here’s a link for more information and online registration.
— Grand Prairie Museum Ride
This is one of Champaign Cycle’s series of bike rides to area museums. This one is Saturday to the Museum of the Grand Prairie at Lake of the Woods in Mahomet. The ride will be 25 to 30 miles, and there is no charge for the ride. Museum admission is also free. Here’s a link for more information.
— Run United 5K
This 5K and kids fun run is Saturday in Springfield. The race benefits the United Way of Central Illinois. Here is the race website for more information.
— Palos Meltdown
This is a Chicago-area mountain bike race on Sunday at the Palos Forest Preserve. It’s part of the Illinois State Championship Race Series. For more information, go to http://palosmeltdown.com/. Click here for information about the race series.
Wednesday, July 23:
— The Sizzling Mile
This is a 1-mile race on the track on the evening of Wednesday, July 23, in Springfield. The heats are based on expected finish time. The race website is http://sizzlingmile.com/.
Friday, July 25:
— Deitweiller at Dark
These races are on a cross country course at Deitweiller Park in Peoria on the evening of Friday, July 25. There are heats for junior high girls, junior high boys, high school girls, high school boys, and an open category for men and women ages 20 and up. Any teams that are racing must sign up by July 24. There is race day registration for individuals. Find out more at www.detweilleratdark.com.
— FOTCOH 5K
This 5K is on the evening of Friday, July 25, in Peoria. It’s a fundraiser for the Friends of the Children of Haiti, and the event also includes a post-race party with food, live music and a silent auction. Click here for more information.
Weekend of July 26-27:
— Crusader 5K Run/Walk
This race is Saturday, July 26, at The High School of St. Thomas More in Champaign. There’s a 5K race and a children’s fun run. Proceeds from the race benefit Holy Cross School. Here’s a link for online registration.
— Route 66 Half Iron, Iron Abe and Stoneman Sprint triathlons
I like these races so much, I keep going back every year. The races are Saturday, July 26, in Springfield. The Route 66 Half Iron distance consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a half marathon. The Iron Abe is a .9-mile swim, a 24.8-mile bike ride and a 10K run. And the Stoneman Sprint is a 500-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 5K run. You can enter any of the races as an individual or as part of a relay team. — Odd Fellows 5K/10K
This race includes a 5K and 10K, and it’s in Mt. Zion on Saturday, July 26. Here’s a link to the race website for more information.
— Hudson LIONS Prowl 5K
This is a 5K run and 2K walk on Saturday, July 26, in Hudson. Click here for more information.
— JT’s 5K Run
This 5K is Saturday, July 26, in Peoria. The race is to raise awareness of melanoma and money for melanoma research. Go to www.jts5krun.com for more information.
— Manteno Triathlon
This sprint triathlon is Saturday, July 26, in Manteno. Distances are an 800-meter swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Here’s a link for more information, and here’s a link for online registration.
— Bike to Brew
This ride sounds like a LOT of fun. It’s an evening ride through Chicago on Saturday, July 26, that ends with a post-ride party at Revolution Brewery. Find out more at www.biketobrew.org.
— BTN Big 10K
This event includes 10K and 5K runs on Saturday, July 26, in Chicago. Runners are encouraged to wear the colors of their favorite Big 10 school, and the race will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The races will be followed by a tailgate party. Go to http://btnbig10k.com/ for more information.
— Quad-City Times Bix 7
This is a race on my bucket list. It’s in Davenport, Iowa, and includes the Bix, a 7-mile race, and the Quick Bix, a 2-mile race, on Saturday, July 26; and a Jr. Bix, with various distances for kids ages 12 and under, on the evening of Friday, July 25. Friday, Aug. 1:
— Midnight Mayhem
This is a midnight 5K trail race on Friday, Aug. 1, at Farmdale Reservior in East Peoria. It’s one of a series of Midnight Mayhem races by the Central Illinois Trail Running Alliance. Runners are required to wear a headlamp. Here’s a link for registration, and here’s a link for information about the Midnight Mayhem races.
Weekend of Aug. 2-3:
— Champaign Park District Mini-Tri
This annual event is Saturday, Aug. 2. It is a 200-yard swim at Sholem Aquatic Center, followed by a 6-mile bike ride and 2-mile run around Centennial Park. New this year: the swim will be in the lap pool only and won’t include the lazy river; and the race will be divided into two categories, competitive and recreational. Competitive racers will start first, according to their estimated swim times. Recreational runners will start in the order they have signed up. The race is limited to 300 participants, and registration closes today.
The event also includes two kids’ races. The Micro-Tri, for kids ages 8 to 13, is a 50-yard swim, a 1-mile bike and a 1/2-mile run. The Nano-Tri, for kids ages 5-7, is a 25-yard swim (with a lifeguard in the water), a 1/2-mile bike ride and a 1/4-mile run.

— Battle of the Genders 10-mile Road Race
This race, on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 2, in Urbana, gives women a 10-minute start on the men. The first three people across the finish line win a coupon for a Papa John’s pizza. This no-frills race is organized by the CU Racing Team. The entry fee is only $5, it’s run on country roads and runners keep track of their own times on their watches.

— Villa Grove Ag Days 5K
This race is Saturday, Aug. 2, in Villa Grove. Here’s a link to the Facebook page for Ag Days, and here’s a link to the race form on that page.
This is a 5K race, a 1-mile walk and a kids fun run on Saturday, Aug. 2, in Philo. The race raises money for the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. There’s a block party with a beer tent and live music in the evening. The evening events will benefit Hope4Aubree, a project that helps families who lose babies. — Tom Short 5K
This is a 5K trail run and 1-mile run/walk on Saturday, Aug. 2, on the General Dacey Trail in Shelbyville. There is a team competition available. Race participants and their families get free entry to the Shelbyville Aquatic Center for a pool party after the race. Race proceeds will be used to maintain the General Dacey Trail.

— Two Rivers Century Ride
This ride is Sunday, Aug. 3, in Kankakee County. There are routes made up of various loops that riders can combine for distances of 22, 47, 62, 80, 100 and 124 miles. Go to www.tworiverscentury.com for more information.
— Olympia Area Kiwanis Corn Daze 5K
This race is Sunday, Aug. 3, at Minier, west of Bloomington. Click here for more information.
— Illinois State Time Trial Championships
This is the second year the state time trial cycling championship has been held in Central Illinois. This year’s race is Sunday, Aug. 3, on a course starting and ending in Tolono.
Here’s a link for online registration, which closes July 31. Pre-registration is required for all riders other than those competing in the open category.
— Kenda DINO Mountain Bike Series race at Kickapoo
This mountain bike race is Saturday, Aug. 2, at Kickapoo State Recreation Area. It’s part of the DINO (Do INdiana Off-Road) series of races, and it’s the first time one of their races has been in Illinois in more than 15 years, according to the website. Find out more here.
