The Fit List
Apparentely summer has finally arrived. It’s going to be a hot and humid weekend, so be sure to take it easy and drink a lot if you are running or cycling. Here’s your list of races:
Weekend of Aug. 23-24:
— C-U Across the Prairie
Prairie Cycle Club’s annual ride is Saturday in conjunction with the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival. You can choose a 10-mile, in-town group ride led by a Prairie Cycle Club member, or loops of 15, 25, 38 or 63 miles through the countryside. All the rides depart from Parasol Records in Urbana. — No Baloney Ride
This ride on Saturday is from Morton. It includes a Family Fun Ride of 8 miles, as well as routes of 25, 50, 62 and 100 miles. For more information, go to www.ivwnobaloney.com.
— Kickapoo Fat Tire Fest
These bike races are Sunday at Kickapoo State Recreation Area. To see the race flyer or link to online registration, go to www.kickapoombc.org. The race is part of the Illinois State Championship Race series, sponsored by the Peoria Area Mountain Bike Association. Here’s a link to information about the race series.
— Bloomington Criterium
The Bloomington Criterium, on Saturday is the 2014 Illinois State Championship Criterium. Check out the race website at http://blmcrit.com/ for more information and to register.
— Gowin Parc’s Race to Remember
This race at Fox Ridge State Park in Charleston on Saturday includes a 10K run, a 5K run and walk, and a 1-mile fun run and walk. The race benefits the Alzheimer’s Association. Click here for online registration.
— Painful Elimination
This race on Saturday is billed as “an ultramarathon wannabe.” It’s run on a 4.25-mile trail loop at Comlara County Park near Hudson. Runners must finish each loop in under an hour, and the next loop starts promptly on the hour. Runners who don’t finish a loop in an hour are eliminated from the race. — Boilermaker Steamer
This is a 5K run, 2-mile walk and kids fun run on Sunday at Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School in Bradley. The race benefits the high school’s athletic programs. The race’s website at www.boilermakersteamer.com hasn’t been updated since last year (*sigh*), but here’s a link to online registration.
— Ken Klipp Classic
This is a 5K run and 2-mile walk on Saturday at Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee. There’s also a Leprechaun Lap for kids ages 8 and under. Here’s a link for online registration.
— Flanagan State Bank 5K
This 5K race is in LeRoy on Saturday and it benefits the LeRoy FFA program. Click here for more information.
Weekend of Aug. 30-Sept. 1:
— Rat Race
This race on Monday, Sept. 1, in Arthur includes 10K and 5K runs, a 5K recreational walk and a 1-mile fun run, as well as the Cheese Chase, a kiddie fun run. Run the race, then get your free cheese. Click here for more information.
— Great Illini Triathlon
This triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 30, includes Olympic and Half Ironman distances. It’s at Lake Mattoon at Neoga. For more information, go to www.greatillinitriathlon.com.
— Hoopeston Sweetcorn 5K
This is a 5K and a 1-mile fun run on Saturday, Aug. 30, in Hoopeston. It’s part of Hoopeston’s National Sweetcorn Festival. Click here for more information.
— Tiger 5K
This 5K run/walk is Saturday, Aug. 30, in Westville. Here’s a link for more information.
— Zoo Run Run
This 5K race is on Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Peoria Zoo. There is also a quarter-mile youth run. For more information, go to www.peoriazoo.org/zoo-run-run.
— Delavan Fall Festival 10K
This race is Monday, Sept. 1, in Delavan, in conjunction with that town’s Fall Festival. Go to www.delavanfallfestival.com and click on the tab for “10K Road Race” at the top.
— Tour de Delavan
If you want to make a weekend of it in Delavan, you can ride this 23-mile bike ride on Saturday, Aug. 30. Go to the same website, www.delavanfallfestival.com and click on the “Bike Race” tab at the top.
— Bridge to Bridge 4 Mile Run
This race is Monday, Sept. 1, in Peoria. It crosses the Illinois River over two different bridges. For more information, go to www.bridgetobridgerun.org.
— International Overdose Awareness Day 5K
This race on Saturday, Aug. 30, is in Mt. Zion. Go to http://overdoseawareness.com/ for more information.
Weekend of Sept. 6-7:
— Arcola Broom Corn Festival 10,000
These races are Saturday, Sept. 6, in Arcola, part of that town’s Broom Corn Festival. There are 10K and 5K races and a 5K recreational walk. Click here for more information.
— Capital City Century
This ride is Sunday, Sept. 7, from Springfield. There are route options ranging from a 10-mile Family Ride to 25-, 40-, 62- and 100-mile routes, as well as a double metric century challenge of 125 miles. There is also a free historic sites ride on Saturday, Sept. 6, that tours historic sites around Springfield. Click here for more information.
— 9/11 Heroes Run
This is a 5K run and 1-mile fun run on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Springfield. Races take place all over the country with the aim to recognize veterans and first responders around the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The race benefits the Travis Manion Foundation, which helps veterans and families of fallen soldiers, and the Springfield Firefighters Local 37 union. Here’s a link for more information.
— AshleyCan Running Bold for the Gold
This event on Sunday, Sept. 7, in Bourbonnais includes a half marathon, 10K, 5K and 1-mile runs. The race benefits the AshleyCan Pediatric Cancer Foundation. For more information, go to http://ashleycan.org.
— Route 6.6 Run/Walk
This is a 6.6K (or 4.1-mile) run/walk on Route 66, starting at Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup in Shirley, on Saturday, Sept. 6. The race starts with an optional shot of maple syrup. All parking is at McLean, where the race finishes, and there is shuttle service to the start. Here’s a link for more information.
— Kick’n Asphalt
This 5K race and 1-mile run is on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 6, in Decatur. The race benefits the Easter Seals of Central Illinois. For more information, go to www.kicknasphaltdecatur.com.
— Memorial Transplant Services 5K Run/Walk
This race is on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Springfield. It raises money for the organization’s Transplant Patient Assistance Fund. Click here for more information.
— IVS Half Marathon
This half marathon is Sunday, Sept. 7, in Peoria. It is run through Springdale Cemetery (which is hilly!). Here’s a link for more information and online registration.
— Mud, Sweat and Gears
This mountain bike race is Sunday, Sept. 7, at Comlara County Park, near Hudson.
