Looking for a race to do during the long holiday weekend? You’ve come to the right place. Here’s your list:
Weekend of Aug. 30-Sept. 1:
— Rat Race
This race on Monday in Arthur includes 10K and 5K runs, a 5K recreational walk and a 1-mile fun run, as well as the Cheese Chase, a kiddie fun run. Run the race, then get your free cheese. Click here for more information.
— Great Illini Triathlon
This triathlon on Saturday includes Olympic and Half Ironman distances. It’s at Lake Mattoon at Neoga. For more information, go to www.greatillinitriathlon.com.
— Hoopeston Sweetcorn 5K
This is a 5K and a 1-mile fun run on Saturday in Hoopeston. It’s part of Hoopeston’s National Sweetcorn Festival. Click here for more information.
— Tiger 5K
This 5K run/walk is Saturday in Westville. Here’s a link for more information.
— Zoo Run Run
This 5K race is on Saturday at the Peoria Zoo. There is also a quarter-mile youth run. For more information, go to www.peoriazoo.org/zoo-run-run.
— Delavan Fall Festival 10K
This race is Monday in Delavan, in conjunction with that town’s Fall Festival. Go to www.delavanfallfestival.com and click on the tab for “10K Road Race” at the top.
— Tour de Delavan
If you want to make a weekend of it in Delavan, you can ride this 23-mile bike ride on Saturday. Go to the same website, www.delavanfallfestival.com and click on the “Bike Race” tab at the top.
— Bridge to Bridge 4 Mile Run
This race is Monday in Peoria. It crosses the Illinois River over two different bridges. For more information, go to www.bridgetobridgerun.org.
— International Overdose Awareness Day 5K
This race on Saturday is in Mt. Zion. Go to http://overdoseawareness.com/ for more information.
— IAITC Bike Ride
This is a one- or two-day ride on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and Wednesday, Sept. 3, through five northwestern Illinois counties. The ride is a fundraiser for the Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom program and is sponsored by the IAA Foundation of the Illinois Farm Bureau. Here is a link for more information.
Weekend of Sept. 6-7:
— Arcola Broom Corn Festival 10,000
These races are Saturday, Sept. 6, in Arcola, part of that town’s Broom Corn Festival. There are 10K and 5K races and a 5K recreational walk. Click here for more information.
— Capital City Century
This ride is Sunday, Sept. 7, from Springfield. There are route options ranging from a 10-mile Family Ride to 25-, 40-, 62- and 100-mile routes, as well as a double metric century challenge of 125 miles. There is also a free historic sites ride on Saturday, Sept. 6, that tours historic sites around Springfield. Click here for more information.
— 9/11 Heroes Run
This is a 5K run and 1-mile fun run on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Springfield. Races take place all over the country with the aim to recognize veterans and first responders around the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The race benefits the Travis Manion Foundation, which helps veterans and families of fallen soldiers, and the Springfield Firefighters Local 37 union. Here’s a link for more information.
— AshleyCan Running Bold for the Gold
This event on Sunday, Sept. 7, in Bourbonnais includes a half marathon, 10K, 5K and 1-mile runs. The race benefits the AshleyCan Pediatric Cancer Foundation. For more information, go to http://ashleycan.org.
— Route 6.6 Run/Walk
This is a 6.6K (or 4.1-mile) run/walk on Route 66, starting at Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup in Shirley, on Saturday, Sept. 6. The race starts with an optional shot of maple syrup. All parking is at McLean, where the race finishes, and there is shuttle service to the start. Here’s a link for more information.
— Kick’n Asphalt
This 5K race and 1-mile run is on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 6, in Decatur. The race benefits the Easter Seals of Central Illinois. For more information, go to www.kicknasphaltdecatur.com.
— Memorial Transplant Services 5K Run/Walk
This race is on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Springfield. It raises money for the organization’s Transplant Patient Assistance Fund. Click here for more information.
— IVS Half Marathon
This half marathon is Sunday, Sept. 7, in Peoria. It is run through Springdale Cemetery (which is hilly!). Here’s a link for more information and online registration.
— Mud, Sweat and Gears
This mountain bike race is Sunday, Sept. 7, at Comlara County Park, near Hudson. The race is part of the Illinois State Championship Race series, sponsored by the Peoria Area Mountain Bike Association. Here’s a link to the race flyer, and here’s a link to online registration. Weekend of Sept. 13-14:
— Amish Country Bicycle Tour
This is a great ride on Saturday, Sept. 13, in the countryside around Arthur. The routes are roughly 20, 42 and 60 miles. Here’s the ride website for more information.
— Crazy K
This race is Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Champaign County Fairgrounds and Crystal Lake Park. If you aren’t familiar with it, the Crazy K is a 5K run with obstacles such as muddy hill climbs, cargo net climbs, hay bales, tunnels, a waterslide and mud, mud, mud! Most people race as part of a team, but you can also race as an individual. There’s a kids’ fun run at 10 a.m., and a kids’ fun zone, food vendors and live music throughout the day. Proceeds from the event go to a number of charities. This will be my first year of doing the Crazy K, as part of Team Danny, and I admit that I’m most excited about the Bodeans concert that evening. — Ogden Masonic Charity Trail Run
This is a 4.25-mile non-competitive run on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Homer Lake. It benefits the Courage Connection, formerly the Center for Women in Transition. Go to http://masoniccharitytrailrun.blogspot.com/ for more information.
— Evergreen Lake Ultras
These races on Sunday, Sept. 14, are at Comlara County Park, near Hudson. Thet are run on a 17-mile loop and there are three distances to choose from: the half-ultra (one loop), the ultra (two loops) or the ultra and a half (three loops). The course is a combination of singletrack and mountain bike trails, open prairie and grass trails, and a short bit of paved road. — Mt. Zion Duathlon
This duathlon is Saturday, Sept. 13, in Mt. Zion, and it includes a 2-mile run, 13-mile bike ride and another 2-mile run. Here’s a website with more information.
— Kickapoo Fat Tire Festival
These bike races were originally to have taken place on Aug. 24 and they’ve been rescheduled to Saturday, Sept. 13, due to rain on the original date. They are at Kickapoo State Recreation Area. The race is part of the Illinois State Championship Race series, sponsored by the Peoria Area Mountain Bike Association. Here’s a link to information about the race series.
— Patriot Cyclocross
This cyclocross race is Sunday, Sept. 14, in Rantoul. Sounds like a blast — I may have to go watch and heckle some riders! Here’s a link for more information and online registration.
— Beast Mode Challenge
If you are into muddy obstacle course runs, this race is for you. It’s on a farm near Springfield on Saturday, Sept. 13, and there are options for racing during the day or at night. The race is 6K to 7K in length, with obstacles such as mud pits, cargo nets, a slick wall climb and an ice bath. You’ll need to bring a headlamp if you opt for the night course. — Bloomington/Normal Komen Race for the Cure
This is Bloomington-Normal’s race to raise money for breast cancer research. It’s Saturday, Sept. 13, and includes a competitive 5K run, a family 5K run/walk and a 1-mile walk. Here’s a link with more information.
— 2 Mile Tune Up
This is a 2-mile race in Lincoln on Saturday, Sept. 13. Click here for more information and to register online.
— Fun Fall Fling 5K
This is a 5K run/walk and kids fun run on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Warrensburg. Here’s a link for online registration.
— 5K Race for Tomorrow
This race is Saturday, Sept. 13, in Kempton (in Ford County). It’s sponsored by the Kempton-Cabery Boosters and proceeds go towards playground equipment and baseball, softball and T-ball programs. For more information, go to http://kempton-caberyboosters.webs.com/.
— Fall Fest 5K Trail Run
This is a 5K trail run and 1-mile fun run/walk on Sunday, Sept. 14, in Momence. There are also Children’s Super Hero Races. Here is the website with a link to the race flyer, and here is the online registration site.
— Pumpkin Classic
This is a 10K run and 2-mile walk on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Morton, part of the Morton Pumpkin Festival. (Mmmm, pumpkin!) Get your pumpkin donuts after the race. Click here for the race website.
— Alpha Kappa Alpha 5K
This 5K run/walk is Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. Here’s a link for more information and online registration.
— 5K Run/Walk for Danielle
This 5K is Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. It’s a fundraiser to help with care of a young woman who suffered a traumatic brain injury. Here’s a link to the website.
