The Fit List has your spring races. Get outside and run.


Weekend of March 12-13:

Huckstadt Hustle 5K

This 5K is Saturday at Bottenfield Elementary School in Champaign. The race is named for the school’s late PE teacher, Wendy Huckstadt, who started a running club at the school. The race proceeds will support Bottenfield students who want to run the Presence Health 5K at the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon in April. Go to for more information.


Cactus Classic Trail Race

This trail race on Saturday at Sand Ridge State Forest near Manito includes distances of (approximately) a marathon, half marathon and 10K. The challenging course is run on trails of loose, sandy soil. Click here for more information.


St. Patrick’s Day 5K

This 5K is Sunday in Bloomington. Here’s a link for online registration.


Weekend of March 19-20:

Mountain Goat

The race is back on the “old” course, meaning more hills! Choose from 8.8-mile or 4.4-mile runs or a 2.2-mile walk. The races are Saturday, March 19, at Kickapoo State Recreation Area. It’s one of Kennekuk Road Runners’ Grand Slam events. Here’s a link for the race flyer, and here’s a link for online registration.


Penguin in the Park 5K

This 5K race is Saturday, March 19, at Fairfview Park in Decatur. Running columnist John “The Penguin” Bingham, a graduate of Millikin University in Decatur, attends the race every year. This year’s race includes a 300-meter Tot Trot. Go to for more information.


Runnin’ of the Irish

This 10K and 5K is Saturday, March 19, in Effingham. Go to for more information.


Interplanetary 5K

This Peoria race on Saturday, March 19, runs through a portion of the Central Illinois Community Solar System, a large-scale model of the solar system. The race includes a 5K, a 1-mile fitness walk and a half-mile kids’ fun run. Here’s a link for more information.


S.O.A.R. Respect Run

This non-competitive 5K is Sunday, March 20, at Miller Park in Bloomington. It is hosted by S.O.A.R. (Special Opportunities Available in Recreation), which provides recreation opportunities for people with disabilities. Click here for more information.


Weekend of March 26-27:

5K Easter Son-Rise and Run

This 5K fun run/walk is on Easter Sunday, March 27, and is part of Easter services at St. James United Methodist Church in Danville. The idea is to recreate the scene at the empty tomb of Jesus, when his followers ran to tell others of the good news. The event is free and open to anyone. Run for Hope

This race on Saturday, March 26, in Bloomington includes a 10K, a 5K and a kids’ fun run. It benefits Home Sweet Home Ministries, which provides services to the homeless. Here’s a link to the race website.
