The Fit List

I’m heading to the River to River Relay this weekend. I have friends headed to Boston for the marathon on Monday. Good luck to you wherever you’re racing. Here’s your list of area events:

 

Weekend of April 16-17:

Strides Against Hunger

This 5K and 1-mile run/walk is Saturday in Arcola. The race benefits the Arcola Food Pantry, and the pantry will provide a free breakfast for racers and community members. Click here for the race flyer.

 

Syrian Refugees 5K

This 5K is Sunday on the University of Illinois campus.  The race benefits Embrace Relief, a non-profit organization providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief. For more information, go to http://uiucsyrianrefugees5k.weebly.com/.

 

Run to Rescue 5K

This 5K race and 1-mile run/walk is Saturday at Tipton Park North in Bloomington. The race is a fundraiser for Catalyst Ministries. For more information, go to http://runtorescue5k.com/index.html.

 

Run for Respect 5K

This 5K race and 1-mile fun run is Saturday in Pontiac. The race benefits Illinois Special Olympics and Pontiac Township High School’s Peers in Action programs. For more information, go to http://runforrespect.weebly.com/.

 

Westside 5K

This 5K race and kids fun run is Sunday in Bloomington. The race benefits West Bloomington non-profit organizations. For more information, go to http://www.westbloomington.org/. Here’s a link for online registration.

 

Taking Steps to end Child Abuse 5K

This 5K run and 1-mile walk is Sunday in Bloomington. The race benefits the Children’s Home + Aid’s Family Visitation Center. Click here for online registration.

 

Little Miracles 5K/10K

This 5K and 10K race is Saturday in Springfield. The race benefits the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. Go to http://www.littlemiraclesrun.com/ for more information.

 

Weekend of April 23-24:

Running of the Rams

This 5K race and kids run is Saturday, April 23, at St. John Lutheran School in Champaign. The object of this race is for the participants to beat the fastest runners on the course -- the rams -- who will start later and try to catch you. Good luck -- you’ll need it. University of Illinois wheelchair athletes will be the rams.

For all you bearded runners, the theme for this year’s race is lumberjacks, and there will be a prize for the best beard. I know several runners who would be good candidates for this prize! For more information, go to http://stjohnls.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/runningoftherams5k/.

 

Sullivan Civic Center Triathlon

This sprint triathlon is Saturday, April 23, at the Sullivan Civic Center. It is a 400-meter swim in an indoor pool, a 13-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Abe’s Mini and Pioneer Sprint triathlons

These triathlons are Saturday, April 23, at Petersburg. Abe’s Mini is a 100-yard swim, 5-mile bike ride and 1-mile run. The Pioneer Sprint is a 300-yard swim, 13-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Go to http://triharderpromotions.com/ for more information.

 

MCStrong 5K Classic

This 5K race is Saturday, April 23, at The Corn Crib in Normal. It benefits The Michael Collins Foundation, which supports several charitable causes. Here’s a link for more information.

 

Tulip 5K for a Cure

Junaia Carter M.D. 5K

This race is Saturday, April 23, in Springfield. The race proceeds benefit M.E.R.C.Y. Communities of Springfield. Click here for online registration.

 

Friday, April 29:

Presence Health Illinois 5K

The 5K of Illinois Marathon weekend is Friday evening, April 29. Online registration closes April 18. You can register for races at the expo on April 28 and 29 if there are spots available. Go to http://illinoismarathon.com/ for more information.

 

Weekend of April 30-May 1:

Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon

Marathon weekend races include -- in addition to the Friday night (April 29) 5K -- the Saturday (April 30) marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 10K and youth run. Online registration closes April 18. You can register for races at the expo on April 28 and 29 if there are spots available. If you aren’t going to run, the race organizers need more volunteers.
