Local swimmer, teammates tackle English Channel

When Erica Cromwell swam for the University of Tampa, she was a sprinter, swimming the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events — in about 25 and 55 seconds, respectively — in a heated pool.

Earlier this month, the Monticello woman completed a far different kind of swim.

These races in Arcola are Saturday. There’s also a 5K recreational walk. There’s chip timing for this race this year.

Tonight is the Illini Challenge cross county meet at the UI Arboretum. Several members of the CU Racing team will be running against the Illini teams. The women’s race starts at 6:30 p.m. and the men’s race at 7 p.m. Go out and cheer them on.

Ready to roll

Cyclists from around the state will be in Champaign County this weekend for the Illinois State Time Trial Championships.

It will be the first time the event has been held in central Illinois. A local racing team, Scarlet Fire Racing, won the chance to organize the race through a competitive bidding process by the Illinois State Cycling Association.
