It's never too late

Olga Kotelko became an athlete late in life but she excelled, setting 37 track and field world records for her age group in her late 70s, 80s and 90s.

Kotelko, who died in 2014 at age 95, visited the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology in 2012 for a series of tests looking at her brain structure and function.

Two local adventurers traveled the Missouri River recently, paddling 340 miles from Kansas City to St. Charles, Mo. They were competing in the Missouri American Water MR 340 race, or the Missouri 340, which bills itself as the world's longest nonstop river race.

Steve Butler of Urbana and Nathan Willard of Mahomet completed the race, which started July 28.

Putting treatment on ice

Along for the ride

It's biking season, and in the past few weeks I've been trying to get in as many bike rides as possible. I often ride with a group, where I have the luxury of following the route the ride organizer has planned for us.

The Fit List

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Here’s your list of races:

A new way to tandem

A new organization in Bloomington-Normal will help people unable to bicycle on their own enjoy the fresh air and sunshine of a bike ride.

Barb Brown of Bloomington founded Healing Rides to provide free bicycle rides in a special bicycle wheelchair tandem along the Constitution Trail.

Brown was unable to ride herself when she was being treated for cancer several years ago.

Be sure to head out the Mahomet on Saturday morning for Buffalo Trace, a very fun trail race at Lake of the Woods.
