Missing periods and you're not pregnant: learn more
Girls and women who stop having monthly periods – and can rule out pregnancy as the reason — might want to check out a new online fact sheet from The Hormone Foundation.
It defines secondary amenorrhea (a condition when periods have stopped for three months or longer) that isn’t caused by pregnancy, along with the symptoms, how the condition is diagnosed and available treatments.
The possible causes are many: eating disorders, stress, immune disorders, weight loss, thyroid disorders, infection, excessive exercise, abnormal chromosomes and others.
Seeing a doctor is advised, because most cases can be detected and treated successfully, according to the Hormone Foundation, an affiliate of the Endocrine Society.
