Family Picks: Musical theater edition


It’s time for the annual Champaign County Fair —  but there’s plenty of indoor musical theater this weekend if you get too hot and sticky. You can even enjoy a parent date night!


158th Champaign County Fair: Friday through July 31, Champaign County Fairgrounds, 1302 N. Coler Ave., U. Admission charge.

The annual extravaganza starts Friday afternoon, with gates open from 3 to 10:30 p.m. and a demolition derby at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the fair is open from 1:30 to 10:30 p.m. and includes a car/truck show and motorcycle rodeo.

Sunday is Family Day and Agriculture Day, with gates open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Highlights: a horse show, waterball competition and Monster Truck show.

Events throughout the week include harness racing, livestock judging, talent show, tractor and truck pull, and lots of games, rides and treats.

Admission is $5 for adults, and kids 12 and under are free. Some events cost extra. On Sunday you can buy a bracelet for $15, with unlimited carnival rides from noon to 5 p.m.

— Sprouts at the Market: 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Market at the Square, Vine and Illinois streets, Urbana. Free.

This is the third in a series of special workshops for children this summer. Kids ages 3 to 8 get a chance to learn about the food system, try new fruits and vegetables, meet local growers, and find out what makes these foods good for kids and grownups alike.

This week, kids get to “eat their colors” and possibly meet some farmers, too.

Kids and adults are invited to join in board and card games, including the clever tile-laying German game “Carcassonne” and “Magic: The Gathering,” a collectible card game.

Veggie tales: “Sweetpea Beauty,” 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Champaign First Church of the Nazarene, 2403 W. Kirby Ave., C. Free.

Parent Date Night: Savoy Recreation Center, 402 W. Graham Drive, Savoy. Admission charge.

Having trouble finding a sitter? The Savoy Recreation Center will watch your children while you enjoy a night out. The price includes games, pizza dinner, crafts, snacks and a movie for the kids.

Admission is $15 for the first child ($20 for nonresidents), and $10 ($13) for each additional child, with a maximum charge of $30 ($40) per family. Register by 5 p.m. Friday.

MUSICAL THEATER

'Annie': 8 p.m. Friday, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Little Theatre on the Square, 16 E. Harrison St., Sullivan. Admission charge.

The timeless tale of Little Orphan Annie is back, a classic musical about never giving up hope. Songs include "It’s A Hard Knock Life," "Easy Street" and the ever-optimistic "Tomorrow."

Tickets are $28 to $30. Other performances continue through Aug. 1.

 — 'Peter and the Wolf': 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Class Act, 114 S. Neil St., C. Admission charge.

Sergei Prokofiev's classic musical tale includes music for all ages. Admission is $6 to $12  and includes lots of family-friendly activities. Proceeds benefit the Prairie Ensemble.

'Honk!' 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Tuscola Community Building, 122 W. North Central St., Tuscola. Admission charge.

The Actors’ Rural Theatre Company presents the musical story of the ugly duckling. Tickets are $5 to $11.  A Barnyard Bonanza from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday includes food, games and treats for children. Reservations are required, and tickets are $10.

'Wipeout!' Danville Light Opera youth musical, 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Bremer Conference Center, Danville Area Community College, 2000 E. Main St. Admission charge.

A cast and crew of 45 young actors ages 8 to 16 are waxing up their surfboards and getting ready to catch some waves in this musical. Tickets are $5 to $7 and will be available at the door 30 minutes before the show or at several locations in Danville.

— ‘Meet Me in St. Louis': 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Country Theatre Workshop, 1280 E. 770 N Road, Cissna Park. Admission charge.

The Smith family of St. Louis — along with everyone else in the city — is preparing for the 1904 World's Fair. But then Mr. Smith informs his family they will all be moving to Boston, where he has a new position. They realize how much they love St. Louis, and don't want to leave. Includes one of the best Christmas songs ever, "Have Yourself  a Merry Little Christmas."

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1:15 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 and include dessert. Other performances are scheduled through Aug. 1.
