Campus parking permit sales down over past few years

Here's a little more detail on parking permit sales for the city of Champaign that I wrote about in today's newspaper. Total permit sales in Campustown have decreased during the past several years for a number of reasons.

The city divides campus into four parking areas, and the price of a 9-month permit is based on how close each area is to the core of campus. Prices get cheaper as spaces get farther from the Quad, part of a pricing stratedy that city officials are using to keep car traffic away from the core. Click here for a map.

Below are tables detailing the number of permits available and the number of permits sold during each of the past several years. The price in the "Total" row of each table is a weighted average, based on the number of permits available for each price.

According to these numbers, 25 percent fewer cars are parked in Campustown at the end of those four years, and city officials have offered fewer permits at a higher price.

And here are the numbers, so far, for this year, current as of 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. It's important to note that these are not final totals from this year. The parking programs office experiences an intense rush for permits as students return to campus, which is exactly what's going on right now.
