Few surprises so far among potential council candidates

Not too many surprises yet among potential candidates for city council. The only new candidate I've been able to find so far is Charles Mingee, a potential challenger to Mayor Jerry Schweighart. I've already written about him in this story and this blog post.

According to the city clerk, Schweighart, District 5 incumbent Gordy Hulten and at-large incumbent Karen Foster have been circulating petitions to get themselves nominated again. According to at-large incumbents Tom Bruno and Deborah Frank Feinen, they too have been doing the same, which means all five sitting council members who are up for re-election are trying to get back on the ballot.

Aug. 24 was the first day potential candidates could start circulating petitions. Mayor and at-large candidates need 63 signatures to get on the April 5, 2011, ballot. Candidates for District 5 need 101 signatures. We'll have a better idea of who's running for city council on Nov. 22, the last day of the week-long period during which candidates are allowed to officially file.

In any case, I'll be checking periodically to see if April voters might see more new names on their ballots. I'll keep you updated. And if you know someone who is running that I did not mention here, please contact me using any of the links below.
