Two volunteer opportunities this weekend

Two volunteer opportunities this weekend

Two community groups are still seeking volunteers for building projects on Saturday:

The first is the Dobbins Downs Community Improvement Association. This summer, they have been working hard to get a playground in their neighborhood, and Washington-based nonprofit KaBOOM! is helping them build one on Saturday. The project is being sponsored by KaBOOM! and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, and the neighborhood group will need a significant amount of volunteers to build the playground in one day.

Here's the schedule for that project, according to a KaBOOM! press release:

When:  Saturday, Sept. 25
Where: 2603 Campbell Dr., Champaign

8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Kick off ceremony and volunteer deployment
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Best viewing of playground construction
1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Final construction phase and adjustments
2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate new play area

The second is a project in the West Washington Street watershed. Neighbors there are building a demonstrative rain garden at a home at 1008 W. Hill St. with a grant from the Prairie Rivers Network.

Organizers are looking for people to dig holes and plant vegetation, and the project will begin at 9 a.m. at that address. If you show up in the morning, bring your own shovel, and be ready to dig.
