Mayor challenged, but most council candidates go unopposed

No surprise candidates walked into the Champaign city clerk’s office on Monday as the deadline for declaring candidacy passed at 5 p.m.

Nobody filed to challenge the three at-large incumbents — Tom Bruno, Karen Foster and Deborah Frank Feinen — who likely will retain their seats when the April 5 votes are cast. District 5 representative Gordy Hulten, who was appointed to fill a vacancy this summer, will also go unchallenged.

Mayor Jerry Schweighart, however, will face his first challenger as an incumbent. Don Gerard, a 42-year resident of Champaign and a facilities manager at the University of Illinois, filed last week to run as a candidate for mayor.

Schweighart was last challenged when he was first elected as the city’s mayor in 1999. He ran unopposed in two elections since then.
