IHSA wrestling tournament could have an estimated $5.1 million impact

The Champaign County Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that 20,000 visitors will travel to Champaign beginning today for the Illinois High School Association state championship wrestling tournament this weekend at the Assembly Hall. The money they inject into the Champaign-Urbana community and the consequent respending by local businesses and their employees is expected to have an estimated $5.1 million impact on the local economy.

Champaign's checkbook: Less than $1 million for first part of February

The city council this week approved $843,307.54 worth of vendor payments for the period between Jan. 28 and Feb. 10.

Champaign's checkbook: $1.7 million during second half of January

The city of Champaign wrote 1,730,174.78 worth of checks to vendors during the period of Jan. 14 to Jan. 27. The city council approved the payments this week (delayed one week because of a canceled meeting).

Somewhat out of context, council member Tom Bruno commented during last night's city council meeting on Jimmy John Liautaud's contemplation of moving his corporate headquarters out of Champaign to Florida following the state legislature's decision in January to raise income taxes.

Why emergency snow routes are not being used

For the sixth time this season, the city of Champaign activated its sidewalk snow removal ordinance on Thursday, giving property owners in Campustown and downtown until Saturday to clear their walks.
