UI student streams live feed from the wreckage of Green Street fire

A University of Illinois student has a video camera pointed at the wreckage resulting from last week’s fire on Green Street, and it is rolling 24/7 for anyone to see.

The live feed is available at savezorbas.com, and the creator said he hopes the website can serve as a comprehensive source of information for those curious about the fire that destroyed the buildings housing Zorba’s and Mia Za’s restaurants and the Pitaya clothing boutique.

“I figured it would just be kind of cool to film it and put up everything that happens,” Jordan Zucker said.

Zucker is filming from the fifth floor of Green Street Towers, near the intersection of Wright and Green streets (just west of Follett’s bookstore and directly across the street from the site of the fire).

Zucker was away from campus during spring break, and said he had heard about the fire before he returned on Friday. But a first-hand look at the damage was more than pictures and words could express.

“I came back and saw everything,” Zucker said. “I was pretty surprised. It was a lot worse than I expected.”

The website also features time lapse videos of what has already been recorded, and Zucker plans to aggregate photos and news stories about the fire and its subsequent events.

He said he feels bad for all the businesses destroyed in the fire, but as he picked the website’s domain name, he felt particular distress for one.

“Clearly, I’m a fan of Zorba’s,” he said.
