State Farm filming again in downtown Champaign

State Farm Insurance was filming again in downtown Champaign on Wednesday, but this week’s video will be seen only by State Farm employees.

Denise Kaveney, a State Farm spokeswoman, said film crews spent Wednesday shooting an internal training video near the intersection of Neil Street and Park Avenue. The insurance group picked the Champaign location because it is “a great little town” near the company’s Bloomington headquarters.

A crew shot in the same location last September, when they filmed a public service announcement asking people not to text while driving (and click here to see the finished product on YouTube). Kaveney said the shoot, which shut down part of Neil Street, was expected to be completed by the end of the day on Wednesday.

I would say avoid that stretch of Neil Street today if you can. Between the film crew and the lane closures for the University Avenue work, Neil Street is an obstacle course today.

The caption on the story is a bit disconcerting. When I read "shooting" I thought guns, not cameras. Maybe filming would have been a better choice. But it is nice to know that Champaign is a "great little town".

I agree. That was a poor wording choice on my part, which is why I've changed the headline.

And, for the record, Champaign has a larger population than Bloomington by a few thousand.

Those of us who own businesses on that block especially thank you for telling people to avoid Neil St. We really made a killing with that promotion.
