Where to keep cool in East Central Illinois
OK, Midwesterners, time to stop complaining. It's been hotter.
I'm tempted to tell today's students that my grade school (St. George School in Tinley Park) didn't have air conditioning, and I don't ever remember being let out early because of excessive heat. Imagine 30 restless, inattentive kids and the teacher who has to keep them under control sitting in a muggy, 90-plus-degree classroom for six hours. Not fun.
But at 22, I feel like I'm not yet old enough to give the "When I was your age..." lectures, so I'll resist. Plus, I realize there are people for whom this heat really is dangerous.
The state has set up a pretty useful website at keepcool.illinois.gov to remind residents to check on their at-risk relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly, and to provide other good heat-related information.
And for those who don't have the convenience of air conditioning, the state has set up cooling centers all over Illinois. Here are a few locations in the immediate area:
- Champaign: 705 N. Country Fair Dr. (not 801 N. Walnut St., as the state's website lists)
- Monticello: 4012 Bear Lane
- Tuscola: 207 East Ficklin St.
- Danville: 220 S. Bowman Ave.
- Clinton: 1275 Route 54E
- Charleston: 119 W. State St.
