More heavy rain, storms ahead...

Another heavy rainfall event is possible for central Illinois late Monday night through Tuesday night.

The cold front that moved through Illinois Saturday night has become stationary from Tennessee back toward Oklahoma. A storm system will move from the Rockies into the Plains during Monday, which will cause a low pressure to develop along the front over Oklahoma and Kansas. This in turn will cause the front to return northward into the Midwest, bringing rich Gulf moisture along with it. Showers and thunderstorms will then develop to the west of Illinois Monday evening and overspread the area late Monday night and linger through Tuesday night.

At this time it appears that storm total rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches will be possible from the pre-dawn hours through Tuesday evening before the precipitation tapers-off and moves east. The soil over many areas of central Illinois remains very moist or saturated, and this additional rainfall will have the potential to produce flash flooding. Many rivers and streams may also overflow their banks.
