Heat wave across the central, southern U.S...

During the next few days, another heat wave will unfold from the Plains into the East. During the weekend, temperatures will reach 100 degrees or higher as far north as the Dakotas. Extreme heat will largely bypass the Corn Belt, but hot weather (95 to 100 degrees or higher) will return to much of the South.

During the next 5 days, rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches in the Corn Belt and 2 to 4 inches in the Southeast. Scattered showers will dot the Southwest, but mostly dry weather will prevail across California, the southern Plains, and the Northwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to above-normal temperatures across much of the nation along with near- to above-normal rainfall.
