Description:
Henry Petroski, professor of Civil Engineering at Duke University, specializing in failure analysis, will speak on "The Evolution of Useful Things," at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Krannert Art Museum, Room 62, as a guest of the designmatters campus-wide initiative to inspire innovation. Petroski will discuss how everyday artifacts - from forks and pins to paper clips and zippers - came to be as they are. No charge for attendance, however early arrival is suggested due to seating limitations. Petroski is a prolific author and his popular books on the design and evolution of everyday objects have resulted in a popular reputation which matches his professional one. As he gained his PhD at UIUC, this homecoming promises to be erudite, thought-provoking and entertaining. As part of the designmatters presentation series, Petroski's talk will stimulate the creative minds of the designers, engineers, and entrepreneurs of our future. For more information:
