Tolono Fun Day

Two days, 5 to midnight June 27; 6:30 a.m. to midnight June 28, of food, music, games, family entertainment and special events. On June 27, the Unity Rockettes dance team will have a Pepsi wagon with barbecue sandwiches, and Tolono VFW will host a fish fry at 5 p.m. A street dance with the band X-Krush, complete with a beer tent, 8 p.m. to midnight on Main Street. On June 28, the festival gets under way with the annual Tolono Fun Day celebration. Events start at 6:30 a.m. with a flag raising at West Side Park, followed by an outdoor ecumenical religious service, featuring Polly's Mixed Ensemble. The United Methodist Church men will serve coffee, juice and doughnuts afterward. The annual parade starts at 11 a.m. Starts at the corner of Central and Walnut streets, winding through the village streets and ends at West Side Park, where awards will be presented. This year's theme is "Lovin' the Land of Lincoln." Grand marshal will be William Kirby, former mayor and current Tolono Historical Society President. The Fountain of Life Family Fellowship will give away clothing until 1 p.m. at the site of the old Tolono hotel on the west end of Main Street. The Dead Horse Lounge will provide a free shuttle between downtown and the park. On Main Street, the beer tent will be open from noon to midnight. The Community Band will play starting at noon near the Scout Cabin in West Side Park. From noon to 3 p.m. Illinois Bass Federation Youth Director Gary Montgomery will host a casting demonstration. Also at noon, the Unity Alumni Basketball Tournament will kick off in the Rocket Center at Unity Junior High School. At 1 p.m. rock/experimental band False Allegations will perform at the park. Tolono native Keith Harden will perform from 3 to 5 p.m. in Tolono's West Side Park. There will be inflatables throughout the day at the park. A variety of activities are planned at West Side Park, including a flea market. Pony rides will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a cow drop contest, and the kiddie tractor pull begins at 1:30 p.m. Strong man John Beatty of Pesotum will be demonstrating his abilities from 4 to 5 p.m. on the basketball court. Vendors at the food court will offer summertime favorites like corndogs, funnel cakes, curly fries, nachos, lemon shake-ups, cotton candy, popcorn and much more. The Big Creek Guitar Band will perform a concert on the main stage from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The evening is highlighted by what is touted as one of the area's largest fireworks shows at dusk, presented by the Tolono-based Boom Boom Boys. Fireworks start at dusk. The day wraps up on Main Street with a street dance, featuring the band Renegade after the fireworks.
