Where:

Between Florida, Philo, Windsor and Race., Urbana

When:

Sunday Nov 2, 2008 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Description:

On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) at the U of I will be out in full-force raking leaves in Urbana. The event will benefit the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and the American Meteorological Society Scholarship Fund. The suggested donation is $5 for front or back yards, and $10 for full yards. One hundred percent of proceeds will go directly to these charities. The Red Cross has been providing relief to those affected by disasters since 1905. Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and mental health services to address basic human needs. In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families affected by disaster to enable them to resume their normal daily activities independently. The AMS, founded in 1919, is the preeminent scientific and professional organization in the atmospheric and related sciences. Its scholarships are awarded to students, both graduate and undergraduate, studying the atmosphere. Ensuring the proper training of meteorologists gives us promise for an increase in the understanding of and accuracy in forecasting hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other weather disasters. Leaf-raking will take place in the neighborhood in southern Urbana bounded by Race Street, Florida Avenue, Philo Road and Windsor Road. If you would like your yard raked, please send an email to Jason Keeler at AMSleaf@gmail.com. Please be sure to include your address and if you want your front, back, or full yard raked.
