American String Festival 2008: Melodies that Moved Lincoln and the Nation

Description:

This two-day music education program, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21, is dedicated exclusively to elementary, middle and high school music students and their teachers. On Nov. 20 instructors will focus on the needs of beginning elementary- and early intermediate middle-school string students with at least one year of playing experience. On Nov. 21 the instructors will work with intermediate middle- and advanced high-school string students. Sessions include hands-on instructional and informational clinics focusing on the use of the fiddle in jig and waltz forms using Lincoln's favorite tune, Rosin the Beau, the mythology of Lincoln as America's rural and urban icon using, Booth Shot Lincoln, and the introduction of fiddle and banjo music as a form of social commentary in the traditional songs, Blue-tail Fly and Angeline the Baker. A guest appearance by the 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Band performing on instruments from the Civil War and the traditional fiddle band, Oberon, the Possum King. The afternoon clinic will include a discussion of the impact of America's urban migration on the musical arts and the injection of African rhythms into mainstream popular music and dance.
