Lincoln's America: Lecture, Luncheon and Book Signing

Where:

Alice Campbell Alumni Center, 601 S. Lincoln Ave., Urbana

When:

Saturday Nov 22, 2008 10:30 am to 12:30 pm

Description:

The two decades leading up to America's Civil War was defined by a great wave of social pessimism and political extremism which infiltrate every aspect of America's culture. With all sides claiming God's blessing, irreconcilable freedoms collided and collapsed as a nation went to war with itself. During those violent years freedoms would be contested by racism and unregulated capitalism, and eventually redefined by Lincoln. Vernon Burton, author of "The Age of Lincoln" will explore the social, economic and political dynamics of Lincoln's America to provide a broader context for understanding the significance of 19th century music and dance for the 16th President and his nation. Lecture is free and begins at 10:30 a.m. Luncheon is $15 and begins at 11:30 a.m. For reservations, contact Vicki Retzolk.
