Join Paul Tyler and Deborah Hyland in this special presentation on 19th-century dance and music which will highlight the evolution and cross pollination of barn dance and ballroom traditions in early America. Hyland, one of America's leaders in Civil War dance recreations, will explore the role of itinerant dance masters who traveled from town to town teaching the latest dance steps and proper social deportment among young gentlemen and ladies while on the dance floor. Tyler, folklore and American studies scholar at National-Louis University and Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music, will discuss the evolution of social dance traditions during America's early westward expansion.
