When:

Saturday Nov 22, 2008 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Description:

Experience the sights and sounds of America's Civil War brass bands and learn what it was like to be a military musician playing on exotic saxhorns and bass trumpets. Children will have an opportunity to travel back in time to Lincoln's America through the stories of Union and Confederate musicians dressed in Civil War era uniforms and listen to such songs as the Mary Todd Polka, Tenting Tonight, Goober Peas, Shenandoah, and the Union March performed on historic instruments by members of Springfield, Illinois' 10th Cavalry Band. They will also learn about the science behind the sounds of these instruments as well as having opportunities to play some of today's modern instruments that trace their heritage back to these Civil War horns. Event is free with admission to the museum ($3 adults, $2 children).
