Description:
The public is invited to free screenings of Jashn-e-Azadi (How We Celebrate Freedom), a documentary by Sanjay Kak. The screenings will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 1:30 p.m. at Brookens Auditorium at the University of Illinois at Springfield; on Monday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m., at University Galleries in Normal; and on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m., at the Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Jashn-e-Azadi is a provocative look at Indian democracy as practiced in Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority state; it is a reflection on power, resistance, and freedom in the 60th year of India's independence. The film explores how the struggle for azadi (freedom) has affected the lives of people living in the Kashmir Valley. The film is a beautifully told story of the lives of ordinary people in an extreme situation, and resonates with the pictures of conflict we see today from many other conflict zones throughout the world. The film screenings will be followed by a discussion with the film director, Sanjay Kak, an independent documentary filmmaker whose recent work reflects his interests in ecology, economic alternatives, and resistance politics. This event is organized by the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Center for Global Studies as part of the newly-established Illinois Network on Islam and Muslim Societies (I-NIMS). CSAMES and CGS are designated Title VI National Resource Centers of the U.S. Department of Education. The event is co-sponsored by the University of Illinois at Springfield; Illinois State University's School of Art, International Studies and University Galleries; the Colloquium on Visual Culture; and Spurlock Museum, Global Crossroads, and the South Asia Reading Group at Illinois. For more information:
