American Cancer Society Look Good…Feel Better®

Where:

Country Cuts, 3701 Curtis Road, Urbana

When:

Thursday Jul 16, 2009 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Description:

Are you or someone you know undergoing cancer treatment? Would a couple of hours spent relaxing, laughing and sharing with others help? If your answer is yes, make your reservations now for the next American Cancer Society Look Good…Feel Better® session being offered on July 16 in Urbana. Guided by volunteer cosmetologists, female cancer patients participating in Look Good…Feel Better® learn how to use make-up and skincare techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation. The free session is about much more than makeup; it is also an opportunity to relax and share with others going through a similar situation. The session is free, but registration is requested to ensure that the proper make-up kit and materials are available for each participant. There are dozens of anti-cancer drugs in use today, each with its own set of possible side effects, according to the American Cancer Society. Possible appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation include hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows or lashes; weight gain or loss; changes in skin pigmentation and texture; skin oiliness, itchiness or peeling; and alterations in nail texture and growth rate. To register for the Look Good…Feel Better® session or for information about additional programs offered by the American Cancer Society, please contact Pam Barak at 800.252.1110, 217-356-9076 or Pam.barak@cancer.org. Look Good…Feel Better® is on Thursday, July 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Country Cuts, 3701 Curtis Road, in Urbana. The session is free. Area residents touched by cancer are encouraged to attend. Look Good…Feel Better® is offered through a partnership of the American Cancer Society; the Personal Care Products Council Foundation; and the National Cosmetology Association. It is also made possible by Relay For Life of Champaign County, which raises funds to support programs offered by the American Cancer Society that help cancer patients and their families. In addition to Look Good…Feel Better®, the Society programs include rides to and from treatment; free wigs, hats and turbans; and a support network that links newly diagnosed patients with cancer survivors. About the American Cancer Society The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force with more than 100,000 volunteers in Illinois and millions elsewhere, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. As the nation's largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer, and countless more who have avoided it, will be celebrating birthdays this year.
