Waffles no longer available on street

CHAMPAIGN — It was a good run, said Crave Truck owner Zach Ware, but his notoriously red "street waffle" food truck will be making only one more appearance before it's permanently garaged.

URBANA — Apartment living hasn't stopped Robin Arbiter and many of her neighbors lacking a yard from growing vegetables, flowers and herbs in the tiny spaces outside their windows.

"The impulse to grow gardens and flowers is very visible in the neighborhood," she says.

Carmon's to close Aug. 26

CHAMPAIGN — Carmon's Bistro will close Aug. 26, with owner Thad Morrow saying he wants more time to spend with his young son.

Morrow said he'll continue to operate Bacaro, his other restaurant in downtown Champaign.

Plus, he said, he'll work with Jeff Mellander, owner of the building that houses Carmon's Bistro, to try to sell the business.

Restaurant slates opening for Friday

CHAMPAIGN — Ichiban Buffet, a restaurant serving a variety of cuisines, has slated its grand opening for Friday at the Schnucks plaza in Champaign.

The restaurant plans to include more than 120 items on its buffet, including Chinese, American and Japanese food, according to Johnny Wang, brother of restaurant manager Cindy Wang.

Officials launched a pilot program this summer that allows registered trucks to operate on public property for longer periods of time than city laws would normally allow.

Taste: A tested, tried, true festival

CHAMPAIGN — Boat Drunks, BritBeat and Brat Pack are among the bands that will perform at the 42nd annual Taste of Champaign-Urbana this weekend at West Side Park.

One of the area's most popular festivals, the Taste opened Friday and will resume from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m to 6 p.m. Sunday.
