Illinois Ancestors: Site pays tribute to Civil War at 150

The 150th anniversary of the Civil War continues to be acknowledged in Illinois at http://www.illinoiscivilwar150.org, where special events throughout the state are posted in addition to a most comprehensive list of links to Civil War data.


Drag show set on Friday

URBANA — The sixth annual Illini Union Board Drag Show, "Divas Old and New," will take place at 9 p.m. Friday in the Illini Union I rooms on the west side of the first floor. The doors will open at 8:30.

Tickets sold in advance at the Illini Union Quad Shop are $5 for students with an I-card and $7 for the public. Tickets purchased at the door will be $7 and $10, respectively.


Radio station changes call letters to WKIO, format to classic hits

CHAMPAIGN — WKIO-FM is once again on the air.

The station, which was a mainstay of the Champaign-Urbana air waves from 1978 to 2005, returned to life Tuesday afternoon, occupying the 107.9 FM frequency that was formerly home to WUIL-FM.

The new WKIO plays classic hits from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, said Mike Haile, general manager of WDWS-AM, WHMS-FM and now WKIO.


Team putting movements under the microscope

URBANA — Art and science will interact this week in the Consilience Project, which will feature several events including a performance, open jams and open studio sessions.

Using motion-capture and other technology, the Consilience Project team will collect information about structures in the body as the dancers — all professionals — move in improvisational dance.


Dance company ready for first performances

URBANA — Armed with a master's of fine arts degree in dance, Kate Insolia last summer founded a dance company of a different kind.

Her auditions were open to people of all ages and ability — or lack of dance skills. And she aimed to explore not just physical movement but a variety of emotions as well.

Urbana organization chooses 23 arts projects for funding

URBANA — The city Public Arts Commission has selected recipients of the 2013 Urbana Arts Grants.

Among them is the Common Ground Food Co-op at Lincoln Square Village, which will receive a total of $5,000 from the city and the Urbana Business Association to start an art gallery. That is the largest amount given to any recipient.


Jameson tasting set for Urbana gallery

Three Irish-themed local businesses — Dublin O'Neil's, Heartland Gallery and Sylvia's Irish Inn — have teamed up to co-sponsor a Jameson Irish Whiskey tasting from 6 to 9 p.m. March 26 at Heartland Gallery, 112 W. Main St., U.


SPEAK Cafe sets theme

CHAMPAIGN — The SPEAK Cafe from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Palette Caf inside Krannert Art Museum will have the theme "Killing Me Softly."
