Daughtry coming to Assembly Hall

CHAMPAIGN – Three-time American Music Award winners Daughtry will bring their 2010 North American Tour to the University of Illinois Assembly Hall. The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. April 18 with special guests.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Feb. 13. An Illinois student presale is scheduled for noon Feb. 12 at Ticket Central in the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., U. Cash only accepted for presale.


Folk singer to perform Sunday at Champaign library

CHAMPAIGN – Folk singer Bucky Halker, who has a Ph.D. in history, will perform Illinois folk music, with commentary, from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. Green St., C.

The event is free and open to the public.


February Dance event features re-imagined work

Choreographer Trisha Brown's masterwork "Astral Convertible" premiered in 1989, with costumes and sets by artist Robert Rauschenberg and a score by Richard Landry and later by John Cage.

Starting this evening, Dance at Illinois will present a "technologically turbocharged" or re-imagined "Astral Convertible," this time with a score by John Toenjes, director of music for Dance at Illinois, and new costumes, sets and lights that use cutting-edge technology.


How to help Haiti

Here are some of the ways East Central Illinois residents are helping the people of Haiti:

 

– Some Franklin Middle School students have raised $700 so far through their “Helping Hands for Haiti” fundraiser.

Members of Franklin’s National Junior Honor Society are collecting donations at lunch, after school and at sporting events for relief in Haiti.


Urbana artist raising money to assist Don Moyer Club

CHAMPAIGN – Artist Jason Patterson, who is biracial, says he has encountered in his life only two minor incidents of racism or prejudice.

One happened when he was young. "I actually didn't notice it; my parents did," he said. The other time came in high school, when a friend called Patterson an "Oreo."


Twin City Derby Girls hosting fundraiser

Twin City Derby Girls, a brand-new women's roller derby league, will host an informational fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Boltini Lounge in downtown Champaign.

With a theme of "Talk 'Derby' To Me," skaters, coaches and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the all-girl sport rolling out in Champaign-Urbana.


Three Grammy winners have ties to area

Three musical artists with area ties were winners at Sunday's Grammy Awards ceremonies in Los Angeles.

Champaign native and bluegrass singer Alison Krauss was one of the performers in "Yo-Yo Ma & Friends: Songs Of Joy and Peace," which took home the Grammy for best classical crossover album.


City of Champaign, arts council teaming up

CHAMPAIGN – The city of Champaign and the Champaign County arts council have teamed up to spiff up empty and other storefronts downtown with art by area artists.

In the pilot program, called Sight Specific, art will be shown in rotation between now and the end of June, when the program will be evaluated.

CHAMPAIGN – The Jeremy Camp concert at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall in Champaign that had been rescheduled for April 30, 2010 has been cancelled because of routing issues. It will not be rescheduled.
