John Frayne: Hobson handles Brahms with aplomb

Ian Hobson went "Gypsy" in the Feb. 5 concert in his Complete Solo and Chamber Music for Piano of Johannes Brahms series.

Foghorn Stringband returns to C-U on Wednesday

URBANA — The Champaign-Urbana Folk and Roots Festival will present the Foghorn Stringband at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Iron Post with special guests The Yellow Jacket Stringband.

The cover charge is $10. The Iron Post is at 120 S. Race St., U.

Lake Land community choir practices begin this month

MATTOON — Rehearsals for the Lake Land College Community Choir are set to begin Feb. 19 to prepare for a performing opportunity in cooperation with the Eastern Illinois University Symphony Orchestra and choirs from the Mattoon middle and high schools.

Sweet Honey music a sound worth craving

URBANA — They've performed for 40 years, including at the White House; received a Grammy Award nomination; and collaborated with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater.

Yet the powerful, versatile and talented all-female a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock is not a household name. Original member Carol Maillard said that makes no sense because the group is so "formidable."

John Frayne: Jasper Quartet offers delightful performances of pieces old and new

The Jasper String Quartet, winner of the 2012 Cleveland Quartet Award, played a varied program Jan. 27 at the Sunday Salon concert in the Foellinger Great Hall at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
