CHAMPAIGN – WEFT 90.1 FM radio has teamed up with the Eastern Illinois Foodbank for the fundraising Radio Food Drive, which gives listeners a chance for a single contribution to the station to have twice the impact.
For every $10 donated to the nonprofit community radio station, WEFT will donate $1 to the food bank. A $1 donation allows the food bank to purchase, through its network of wholesale food distributors, $10 worth of food to help families in need.
Five collegiate jazz bands including the University of Illinois' will perform in the Illinois Collegiate Jazz Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Millikin University's Kirkland Fine Arts Center in Decatur.
The other schools represented will be Millikin, Eastern Illinois University, Knox College and Bradley University. The bands will perform classic jazz band music of the big band era, plus works by con- temporary jazz composers.
CHAMPAIGN – Guitarist Fareed Haque, who performed at the Wall to Wall Guitar Festival in 2007 at Krannert Center, will perform in the Steve Gorn and Fareed Haque Duo at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Krannert Art Museum, 500 E. Peabody Drive, C.
Haque, a professor at Northern Illinois University, moves easily from jazz to classical to jam-band to world-fusion music. A master of the Bansuri flute, Gorn has established a distinctive career in both the classical Indian tradition and in contemporary world music.
Although she has been involved in community theater for several years, this is the first time Gaye Garner is directing a Danville Light Opera production.
The fact that Garner has loved "Cabaret" since 1994 probably had more than a little to do with her taking on this responsibility.
CHAMPAIGN – Rohan de Silva, an internationally acclaimed pianist and accompanist to violinist Itzhak Perlman and other greats, will perform Beethoven's Triple Concerto in the Prairie Ensemble "The Ultimate Valentine's Date" on Saturday evening.
The other guest artists on the piece will be violinist Stefan Milenkovich and his wife, cellist Ani Aznavoorian, both faculty members in the University of Illinois School of Music and good friends of de Silva, who also accompanies violinists Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham and others.
CHAMPAIGN – Amasong, Champaign-Urbana's Premier Lesbian/Feminist Chorus, will have a Valentine's Bid & Boogie fundraiser Saturday evening featuring new jewelry for sale, plus white elephant jewelry for a silent auction.
Also, a featured piece donated by Christopher's Fine Jewelry will be raffled.
URBANA – Tickets for the March 1 Sara Bareilles concert go on sale today for University of Illinois students and Friday for the general public.
The singer/songwriter/pianist will perform at Foellinger Auditorium as part of her "Gravity" tour of North American venues. She is being brought here by Star Course, the UI student-run concert productions and promotions organization.
At Unity High School in Tolono, voices will lift in song – no instruments necessary.
At Urbana Middle School, a harmony of instruments will fill the air – no voices necessary.
CHAMPAIGN – Tickets will go on sale starting at noon Saturday for the March 8 concert of rapper T.I., with special guests Keri Hilson and Yung L.A., at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall Star Theatre.
There will be a special Illinois student presale starting at 10 a.m. Friday at Ticket Central in the Illini Union. Illinois students receive a $2 discount with a valid I-Card. Tickets range from $35 to $42 and will be available at the Assembly Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets including Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 333-5000.
Monday is the deadline for ordering "Singing Valentines" to be delivered by members of the Champaign Urbana Theatre Company.
For $30, people can have a Singing Valentine sent to friends and loved ones, within the Champaign/Urbana/Savoy city limits.
