URBANA – Ask people what hip-hop means to them and you tend to get answers like bling, saggy pants or baseball hats worn to the side. Some folks might even make beat-box music.
All those water down a vibrant culture that has spread across the globe in a short amount of time, with roots that go far beyond Grandmaster Flash and other hip-hop pioneers to African and Caribbean music and culture, said Millicent Johnnie, a hip-hop scholar and dance professor at Southern Methodist University.
URBANA – As part of its 50th anniversary season the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra on Saturday evening will welcome back former C-U Symphony conductor Paul Vermel.
As part of an "Old Friends and New Faces" concert theme, the orchestra also will introduce cellist Dmitry Kouzov, a new assistant professor at the University of Illinois School of Music. The after-concert reception at Jim Gould Restaurant will be for him.
DANVILLE – Tickets will go on sale to the public Tuesday for the Danville Light Opera production of "The Civil War."
The show is sponsored by the Vermilion County Museum as part of its Lincoln Celebration.
URBANA – Auditions for Zoo Improv will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Independent Media Center, 202 S. Broadway Ave., U.

SIDNEY – The Creative Dramatics Workshop will have auditions in early October for "Little Women." They will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 5.
"Little Women" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11, 12, 18 and 19 and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 13 and 20.
SIDNEY – The Creative Dramatics Workshop in Sidney will present "Romeo and Juliet" over the next three weekends. This is the fourth time that workshop director Robert Picklesimer has directed the play.
"But this time, with 'Romeo and Juliet,'" he said, "we are doing something very unique. We are performing three different weekends, and each weekend we will have a different Juliet. And two different Romeos. And three different Nurses."
URBANA – Floodwaters in late August invaded Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, damaging the Colwell Playhouse stage and its downstage lift, among other things.
DANVILLE – The Red Mask Players will hold open auditions for the play "Tom Jones" by David Rodgers at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 and 13 at the Kathryn Randolph Theater, 601 N. Vermilion St.
Days for these audition occur on a Saturday and Sunday instead of the normal audition schedule of a Sunday and Monday.
CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign Urbana Ballet will have auditions on Friday and Saturday for its holiday performances of "The Nutcracker."
The auditions are scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Friday and 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the CU Ballet academy at 2810 W. Clark Road, C.

The historic Lorraine Theatre will celebrate its one-year anniversary under the ownership of Josh Caudle with four showings in three days (Oct. 2-4) of the classic "Gone with the Wind," directed by David O. Selznik and starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
