Holiday performances this week feature one-act plays

DANVILLE — The Red Mask Christmas production featuring one-act plays will be presented from Thursday through Saturday at the Kathryn Randolph Theater, 601 N. Vermilion St.

Linda Bolton will direct three one-act plays. The first two are short and from different spectrums of the Christmas universe.

'Independence' a naturally dark family drama

URBANA — Danville resident Nancy Keener just got back to doing theater a year or so ago, spending most of her stage time in Danville Light Opera choruses or ensembles.

Figuring she needed experience auditioning, she traveled to Urbana to try out for a role in "Independence," a four-character family drama by Lee Blessing that opens Thursday at the Station Theatre.

UHS theatre program sets fundraiser

URBANA — The Urbana High School theatre program is hosting a "Zumbathon" event Saturday, Dec. 8.

It's scheduled from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. at the Urbana Middle School cafetorium.

Group schedules auditions for comedy

CHAMPAIGN — The Parkland College Theatre will hold open auditions for the classic American comedy "You Can't Take it With You" by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.

The auditions are set for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the theater. Callbacks, if needed, will be at 7 p.m.

John Frayne: UI opera production of 'Florencia' a triumph

I attended the last of the four-performance run of Daniel Catan's opera "Florencia en el Amazonas" on Nov. 11, and I enjoyed the performance enormously.

First, Catan's music: His style harks back to Giacomo Puccini in the melodic lushness with which Catan evokes the wonder of the tropical riverscape of the Amazon and the strong passions of his characters.
