URBANA — Brett Walker seemingly can't stop creating stuff.

The 27-year-old doctoral student at the University of Illinois started a gun-parts business in high school.

He turned his attention to fuels in college, converting waste grease into biodiesel and "slop oil" into pipeline-grade oil.

Three from N-G place in top three in writing contest

The News-Gazette's Paul Klee, Bob Asmussen and Jim Rossow each placed in the top three in writing categories in the national Associated Press Sports Editors contest.

The News-Gazette had more top five finishes (four) than any sports section in the country competing in the 30,000-75,000 circulation category.

Nathan Landolt has opened Error Records at 702 S. Neil St., C, in the space that formerly housed the skateboard shop called Board Boutique.

Error Records sells vinyl records, cassette tapes, compact discs, DVDs and zines — often self-published magazines.

First State Bank adds Gensler. Justin Gensler has joined First State Bank as branch manager of the facility at Neil Street and Windsor Road in Champaign.

In addition to operational oversight of the branch office, he will focus on mortgage lending and community engagement.

16-story building planned for Fourth and Green

CHAMPAIGN — A 16-story apartment building has been proposed for the northwest corner of Fourth and Green streets in Campustown — where an IHOP restaurant and convenience store now stand.

March home sales drop a bit from '12

CHAMPAIGN — Wintry weather and a low inventory of houses on the market helped push down March home sales, the Champaign County Association of Realtors said.

The association's Multiple Listing Service reported 160 sales of homes in March, down from 179 in March 2012.

Residents criticize plan for Champaign subsidized housing

CHAMPAIGN — More than 100 people packed the Champaign City Council chambers Tuesday night, many of them there to criticize a plan to put subsidized housing in west Champaign near the Turnberry Ridge subdivision.
