Clothing drive set for those seeking employment help

Cleaning out your closets? Suits don't fit anymore?

The United Way's Emerging Community Leaders group is organizing a professional-clothing drive and a job-tips booth to help people who need jobs or clothing to wear to work.

The clothing drive is scheduled from Oct. 11 to Oct. 16 and will benefit the Center for Women in Transition and the Salvation Army.

DANVILLE – One year ago Thursday, Brad Irle and a group of private investors took over ownership of Th Snyder, a custom woodworking business that creates cabinetry, moldings, doors and more for high-end residential projects.

Production to start by early spring at shuttered Rantoul pork plant

RANTOUL – Production at the Rantoul pork plant – which has been shuttered for a year and half – is projected to start in late winter or early spring.

Kurt Irelan, construction manager for new owner Trim-Rite Inc., said the company plans to expand the west Rantoul plant, which encompasses 12,000 square feet.

Consultant hired to do area labor survey

CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign County Economic Development Corp. has hired a consulting firm to survey area employers about their work force.

The firm, Growth Services Group of Jefferson City, Mo., is expected to send the survey to employers electronically next week, said Erik Kotewa, deputy director of the economic development group.

Joliet firm picks up Coldwell Banker franchise

CHAMPAIGN – A Joliet real estate firm will pick up the Coldwell Banker residential franchise in Champaign, Peoria and Springfield that Devonshire Realty has had.

Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell, which operates in the southwest and western Chicago suburbs, will expand operations to central Illinois as a result of the move, the company announced this week.

Unemployment drops throughout area for August

CHAMPAIGN – Unemployment rates fell in August throughout East Central Illinois, but Champaign County's rate remained higher than it was a year earlier.

All 11 counties in East Central Illinois enjoyed month-to-month declines in August.

Blue Cross to close Champaign office

CHAMPAIGN — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois plans to close its Champaign office and have the 90 employees either work from home or the Danville office, the company said Wednesday.

Jimmy John's workers in Minneapolis aim to unionize

Employees of a Jimmy John's franchise in Minnesota have organized a union and are seeking better pay, better working conditions and more benefits.

Right now the campaign is focused on organizing employees in the Minneapolis metropolitan area. The Jimmy John's sandwich chain, which has over 1,000 stores across the country, is headquartered in Champaign.
