CHAMPAIGN — Jimmy John Liautaud, founder and CEO of the Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches LLC, said he someday wants to return his home and his business to Illinois. But for now he's headed to Florida.

Jobless rate, number of employed both down across area

Unemployment rates in East Central Illinois fell in September, not only from August but also from a year earlier.

Champaign County's unemployment rate dropped to 7.8 percent in September, down from 8.9 percent in August.

Jobless rates drop in August

CHAMPAIGN — Unemployment rates in East Central Illinois were generally lower in August than they were in July — and also lower than a year earlier.

Champaign County's rate was 8.9 percent in August, down from 9.1 percent in July and 9.3 percent in August 2011, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Clifford-Jacobs to eliminate second shift, lay off 36

CHAMPAIGN — Clifford-Jacobs Forging Co. will eliminate its second shift on Friday, laying off 36 people, company President Bruce Wylie said Wednesday.

The move comes two years after the forging company in north Champaign added a second shift for the first time in 30 years.

RPC to absorb job-training consortium

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign Consortium is coming under the umbrella of the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission.

The consortium is the local agency that administers Workforce Investment Act grants for job training in Champaign, Ford, Iroquois and Piatt counties.
