It's Your Business: Firehouse Pizza plans May debut at Zelma's site

A pizza chain that got its start in the Peoria area is coming to the former Zelma's site on Windsor Road in Champaign.

Firehouse Pizza plans to open at 1103 W. Windsor Road, C, in mid-May, said Erik Perkins, who with his partners Marcus Hazel and Edward Flores operates three other Firehouse Pizzas in Illinois — at Washington, Morton and Normal.

Teamsters stay off job at Allied Waste

URBANA — About 20 members of Teamsters Local 26 stayed away from work at Allied Waste Services on Thursday, honoring a picket established there by an Ohio-based Teamsters local.

The work stoppage complicated collections by Allied, which has about 3,000 commercial customers and 7,000 residential customers in the Champaign-Urbana area.

Joblessness, total jobs both up in February

Unemployment rates in February were higher than in January — and also higher than a year earlier — in most East Central Illinois counties.

Champaign County's rate was 9.2 percent, up from 9 percent in January and 8.4 percent in February 2012, the Illinois Department of Employment Security reported Thursday.

CHAMPAIGN — After 4 years of planning, Bankier Apartments is about to embark on its tallest apartment building yet — a 14-story building at the southwest corner of Sixth and Green streets.

Follett's to close this spring

CHAMPAIGN — After nearly 75 years in Campustown, Follett's will close the book on its store at Green and Wright streets in May.

Company spokesman Elio DiStaola said the store will close May 29, having served generations of University of Illinois students.
