Trooper, others lift vehicle off I-57 crash victim

RANTOUL — After more than eight hours on the snowy interstates helping drivers Monday, Illinois State Trooper Brian Scott was growing weary.

But thankfully for a University of Illinois student, the 35-year-old trooper wasn't so tired that he couldn't help lift a 3,000-pound vehicle off the young man, undoubtedly saving his life.


Man faces weapons charges

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun and later fired it in the air was arrested Monday.

Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Ed Ogle said about 6 p.m. Monday, deputies were called to the 2700 block of East High Street in Urbana.

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly threw gasoline in the face of a friend and set him afire over the weekend is in the Champaign County Jail.


Group sues Ford-Iroquois agency over public records

PARIS, Ill. — The head of a watchdog group investigating the finances of the Ford-Iroquois Public Health Department has filed a lawsuit, contesting the agency's denial of a Freedom of Information Act request.

The lawsuit was filed Friday in Edgar County Circuit Court by John Kraft of Paris, Ill., who co-owns the nonprofit Edgar County Watchdogs' website with Kirk Allen of Kansas, Ill.


Charges expected in Assembly Hall incident

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man is expected to be formally charged after allegedly trying to bring weapons into the Assembly Hall.

University of Illinois police say 64-year-old Kenneth Bergman was arrested at around 9 p.m. Saturday.

UI police Capt. Roy Acree said Bergman was talking to people outside the arena and said some suspicious things that led those people to call police.


Danville police investigate shooting

DANVILLE — Danville police are investigating a shooting that injured a 15-year-old Danville resident over the weekend.

Police were called to the 800 block of North Griffin Street shortly after midnight Friday to a call of shots fired, Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said.

Mahomet man accidentally shot in leg

MAHOMET — A Mahomet man who was target shooting in the country with friends was accidentally shot in the leg Saturday afternoon.

A spokesman for Carle Foundation Hospital said Howard Yu, 27, was in fair condition after being shot below the right knee.
