Cause of tool shed fire near Homer under investigation

HOMER — Personnel from the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 28 investigation team are looking into the cause of a fire at a tool shed northeast of Homer late Friday afternoon.

According to a fire department report, firefighters were called to a fire at a metal tool shed at 398 Lincoln Trail Road, about 5 miles northeast of Homer, at 5:51 p.m.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A judge has ruled that DNA tests can be done on bloodstains in connection with the case of a suburban Chicago woman accused of stabbing to death her young son and a girl she was babysitting.

Woman dies in Piatt County crash

La PLACE — One woman died and a second was injured as a result of a two-vehicle collision in southwestern Piatt County Thursday morning.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Jorden Austin, 20, died at 5:13 p.m. Thursday in the intensive care unit at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Domestic dispute brings drug charge

URBANA — A domestic dispute between an Urbana man and woman led police to a small cache of cocaine Thursday.

Urbana police officer Matt Quinley said officers received a call about 10:15 a.m. Thursday that a woman was chasing a man with a knife at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of East Florida Avenue, Urbana.

Police seek help in Urbana shooting

URBANA — Urbana police are asking for help from the public in finding a man who allegedly shot another man on the city's east side last weekend.

Lt. Bryant Seraphin said officers were called to the apartment complex at 1404 Silver St. just after 1 a.m. on March 16, initially on a report of a domestic dispute. As they were en route, the call changed to one that shots had been fired.

Man faces sex charges

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man who allegedly sexually assaulted a young woman in his home last week has been criminally charged with multiple criminal counts.

Champaign police Lt. Bob Rea said his department was notified Wednesday by authorities at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where the teen went to be checked out after an assault that allegedly happened days earlier.

Man sentenced to prison in home invasion

URBANA — A Rantoul man who admitted he robbed a man of cash in the man's Rantoul home has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Travis P. Burke, 23, pleaded guilty Thursday to home invasion before Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis.

Man sent to prison in heroin case

URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted having heroin intended for sale has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Joseph L. Reed, 26, whose last known address was in the 1500 block of Hunter Street, pleaded guilty Wednesday before Champaign County Judge Harry Clem to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

Bill would allow prosecution for false complaints about animal shelters

SPRINGFIELD — Legislation that would allow the Department of Agriculture to refer for prosecution false complaints against an animal shelter was approved by an Illinois Senate committee Wednesday.

The bill (SB 1532), is sponsored by Sen. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet.

Five injured in west Champaign crash

CHAMPAIGN — Five people were taken to an area hospital Tuesday afternoon following an intersection collision in west Champaign.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said at 2 p.m. officers were sent to the intersection of University Avenue and Country Fair Drive, where they found two vehicles crashed in the middle of the intersection.
