Lightning hits SUV, punctures road

TOLONO — Lightning that struck a sport utility vehicle Wednesday night created a 2 1/2-foot-wide hole and a second 8-inch-wide hole in the asphalt on a county road in rural Tolono.


Appellate Court comes to DACC

DANVILLE — While Danville Area Community College students think that Chuck Hantz is a top-notch political science instructor, they said his lecture on the judicial system earlier this week couldn't compete with the follow-up lesson.

That lesson came courtesy of the Fourth District Appellate Court, which held oral arguments on two cases at the community college on Wednesday morning.


Urbana man accused of shooting at father

URBANA — An Urbana man wanted on a warrant for the attempted murder of his father is due back in court May 21 after being found last week in Indiana.

Quintin Brown, 21, whose last known address was in the 200 block of West Beslin Street, Urbana, had been wanted since a Feb. 3 incident in northwest Champaign.


Jury acquits man in sexual assault case

URBANA — A Champaign County jury took about an hour Wednesday to acquit an Urbana man of criminal sexual assault charges.


Judge denies emergency order against Gerard, sets next hearing

URBANA — A judge on Wednesday denied a musician's request for an emergency stalking/no contact order against Champaign Mayor Don Gerard, but set a hearing later this month on a request for an order of protection.


Rantoul hosting exercises for area emergency units

RANTOUL — The village will be teeming with state and area emergency response agencies beginning Thursday and ending Saturday as they participate in a domestic emergency response exercise.

Rantoul Fire Chief Ken Waters said hundreds of emergency personnel will be on hand during all or part of the three days. Among those participating will be the Illinois National Guard.


Musician seeks order of protection against Gerard; mayor denies accusations

CHAMPAIGN — A new filing asking a judge for an order of protection against Champaign Mayor Don Gerard alleges the mayor harassed a musician during a volunteer event on Saturday.

Jim Bean, a Champaign musician, says he was in the middle of a song during the event when Gerard allegedly approached Bean and accused Bean of harassing Gerard's daughter.


Indiana driver hurt in Ford crash; Buckley woman ticketed

PAXTON — A Buckley woman was ticketed following a crash in Ford County that she allegedly caused Tuesday morning.

Illinois State Police from Ashkum said Janice S. Nieman, 53, was driving south on Interstate 57 in the right lane when she pulled in front of another car in the passing lane to avoid traffic that was merging onto the interstate.


Vandals hit Tuscola cemetery twice in a week

TUSCOLA — Employees of Adams Memorials in Charleston worked on Monday to replace headstones at the Tuscola Township Cemetery, located at U.S. 45 and South Prairie Street, following the vandalism of 57 headstones over the past week.

URBANA — A registered sex offender arrested over the weekend in connection with the attempted sexual assault of a University of Illinois student is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $500,000 bond.
