Hearing on Champaign County Jail canceled

URBANA — Monday’s public hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Urbana Civic Center regarding the Champaign County Jail has been canceled.

Champaign County Administrator Deb Busey said that Dr. Alan Kalmanoff, director of the Institute for Law and Policy Planning, who was originally scheduled to speak at the hearing, was unable to make it to Champaign County from California.


Ted's Garage in Clinton destroyed during Easter Sunday fire

CLINTON — A 1950s garage-themed restaurant fell victim to an Easter evening fire on Sunday, but no one was hurt, according to fire officials.

Ted’s Garage, at 808 W. Van Buren St. in Clinton, burned for hours on Sunday evening. Firefighters got the initial call at 5:18 p.m. and were still battling the fire at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night, said David Dallas of the Clinton Fire Department.

Urbana man's death an apparent suicide

URBANA — An Urbana man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head early Saturday in the parking lot of a grocery store.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said H. Clifford Heaton, 89, who lived on West Evergreen Court, was pronounced dead in the parking lot of the County Market store, 1819 S. Philo Road, U, at 2:45 a.m.


Teen not seriously hurt after crashing car into Urbana house

URBANA — Tracy Law was organizing her videos and DVDs Saturday afternoon when she heard a bang at the front of her home.

"I thought the tree had fallen on the house," said Law, of 904 E. University Ave., U. "Then I heard breaking glass on the inside of the closet."

Drug charges dismissed against three

URBANA — Three of four men criminally charged in Champaign County in connection with heroin sales in Champaign have had their cases dismissed.

This week and last week, felony drug charges were dismissed against Davante Hopkins, 18, and D'angelo Neal, 20, both of Park Forest, and Dwight Harper, 52, of Chicago Heights.


Six-year prison term for weapons plea

URBANA — A Champaign man who had guns and drugs in his home earlier this year has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Tyren L. Scott, 24, who listed an address in the 1500 block of Holly Hill Drive, pleaded guilty Thursday before Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis to unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.


Man sentenced to conditional discharge for trespass plea

URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted he was in a woman's home after being ordered to leave has been sentenced to two years of conditional discharge.


Man charged with criminal sexual abuse, unlawful restraint

URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly groped a woman with whom he was arguing has been charged in Champaign County Circuit Court with criminal sexual abuse and unlawful restraint.

Melvin L. Johnson, 20, who listed an address in the 1100 block of East Colorado Avenue, was arrested about 2:15 a.m. Thursday for an incident that occurred in the 500 block of West Elm Street.
