Schools foundation making 'richer experience for kids'

After 25 years of raising money for public schools in Champaign and Urbana, giving grants to teachers and enriching the educational experience of thousands of students, the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation is turning 25.

School board hears about pilot alternative to suspension

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school board heard Monday about a program that could provide students a chance to learn academics and social skills and catch up on homework, rather than being suspended out of school.

The board is expected to vote April 22 on the program, which would be a one-year pilot.

Champaign schools adding gifted program at Kenwood Elementary

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school district is creating a new gifted program at Kenwood Elementary, and it will start with a first-grade classroom.

All kindergarten students currently registered in the school district can apply, as can any kindergarten-aged students living within the school district.

First Baptist Christian School 60th anniversary open house set April 26

DANVILLE — First Baptist Christian School will host an open house/registration night on April 26 to mark the school's 60th anniversary.

The open house will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, 1211 N. Vermilion St., Danville.

There will be games and a registration in the gym, and a spaghetti dinner in the lunchroom.

Danville school board to get update new report-card program

DANVILLE — The Danville school district rolled out new standards-based report cards for kindergarten through second-grade students this year. Now, it's getting ready to do the same for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders next year.

School officials will give board members an update on the implementation process at Wednesday's school board meeting.

Music boosters selling flower cards

DANVILLE — Danville High School's Instrumental Music Boosters are selling Danville Gardens flowers cards for $10 apiece.

The cards are good for $10 worth of Danville Gardens merchandise, and proceeds will benefit the school's instrumental music programs.

The Champaign-Urbana Elks Lodge 2497 has named Sydney Orr of Savoy and Sean Kelley of Philo as recipients of the ELKS National Foundation's Most Valuable Student Scholarship awards.

Orr and Kelley will receive $500 a year for four years.

Girl Scouts to honor 5 adult Women of Distinction

For 22 years, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois has recognized outstanding women for their contributions to their communities and for being role models to young women.

At a Thursday banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign, Ranija Turner will be honored as the Young Woman of Distinction.

DANVILLE — Danville High School officials are applying for a competitive grant for up to $6 million in federal funding to implement a plan aimed at significantly increasing student achievement.
