Bement schools chief takes new job

BEMENT — School Superintendent Daniel Brue has accepted the top post in the Meridian school district, a job he will take over on July 1.

Brue, who has been at the 322-student Bement district for four years, said he is looking forward to the challenge at Meridian, a school system with an enrollment of 1,021 located just south of Decatur.

Graduate conference to focus on landscapes

URBANA — The public is invited to "Landscapes: Performing Space & Culture: A Graduate Conference," taking place Friday and Saturday at the University of Illinois.

The conference was organized by graduate students in the UI's theater history and criticism program and the Theatre Student Organization.

Fundraiser scheduled this weekend

URBANA — A group of supporters of the Mo' Betta Music Program will host a fundraiser for the program from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Urbana Civic Center, 108 E Water St.

The Mo' Betta Band, which concentrates on jazz and R&B, will perform at the event, and food will be served. Also, Barrington Coleman, a professor of voice at the University of Illinois, will be a special guest.

Brown University prof to deliver lecture

CHAMPAIGN — The Archaeological Institute of America Lecture at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Krannert Art Museum auditorium will be delivered by Lanny Bell, adjunct professor of Egyptology at Brown University.

Bell's topic will be "Mythology and Iconography of Divine Kingship in Ancient Egypt."

Schlarman Academy principal to retire

DANVILLE — Schlarman Academy officials will begin searching for a new leader soon.

That's because Principal Bob Rice will step down at the end of the school year after more than 43 years in education, the last six at the Catholic school.

Rice said the decision to retire wasn't easy.

Wiegand's 'State of the District' set for Thursday

CHAMPAIGN — School district Superintendent Judy Wiegand will visit the Champaign PTA Council's meeting Thursday night and give a "State of the District Address."

The meeting is open to the public and is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Carrie Busey Elementary, 304 Prairie Rose Lane, Savoy. Wiegand will also answer questions after her speech.

Urbana OKs agreement that allows hiring more teachers from Spain

URBANA – The Urbana school district Tuesday approved an agreement with the Illinois State Board of Education for its international exchange program that allows school districts to hire teachers from Spain.

Danville school candidates tackle varied topics

DANVILLE — Danville school board incumbent Dan Brown said he pushed to eliminate a policy ending an early retirement incentive for non-union district employees, which gave them a 6 percent salary increase each year in the last three years of their career.

Rossville-Alvin OKs bond resolution for renovating high school

ROSSVILLE — Rossville-Alvin school officials are moving forward with plans to renovate the high school and move grade school operations there next school year.

Board members approved a resolution of intent to issue $1.15 million in bonds to help finance the repairs at a special meeting Monday.
