Marathon extends registration for most events

Procrastinators, you've got a few extra days to enter one of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon races.

Race officials have extended the deadline for registration from Friday to midnight on Monday.

Marathon still needs volunteers, but most jobs covered

The Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon still needs a few dozen course volunteers, but most of those jobs are now covered.

As of Friday afternoon, the race still needed 11 people to work at specific intersections along the course, and 25 more volunteers to be placed into course jobs as necessary on race day, said Mary Anderson, the volunteer coordinator for the race.

CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign County YMCA has raised more than $12 million of the $16 million goal it set for a new facility in southwest Champaign.

That enabled the Y to break ground Wednesday for the new building at 2501 Fields South Drive.

Work on the 75,000-square-foot facility is expected to get under way immediately, with completion targeted for early 2012.

It was the first time she'd kayaked on open water.

"That's a workout," she said, rubbing her arms after she got out of her kayak.
