CHAMPAIGN — Students at Barkstall Elementary are about to learn a lot about fitness.
The school is starting a schoolwide initiative to encourage physical activity called "Fitness is Fun." It's registered with Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, and students and teachers will log their physical activity every week.
These women give new definition to the term "soccer moms."
Oh, they've done their share of carpooling and cheering for kids from the sidelines at soccer matches, hockey games and baseball tournaments.
But this is their turf. Er, pitch.
CHAMPAIGN — The Fitness Center will vacate its longtime home on Galen Drive in Champaign and consolidate at its recently acquired facility on Round Barn Road, its general manager said Thursday.
Rich Ruthenberg said the facility at 1914 Round Barn Road, C, will be enlarged and remodeled over the next few weeks, and the move from 2508 Galen Drive will likely come in mid-March.
Call it a birthday resolution.
When Tony Hillen turned 29 shortly before Christmas 2011, he resolved he would not be overweight when he hit 30. He weighed 295 pounds, and he set a goal of losing 100 pounds during the next year.
When he weighed in a couple of weeks ago, as he was about to turn 30, he'd lost more than 115 pounds.
Time for a new goal.
SAVOY — A local teacher is heading to Washington this week to give a presentation on how her school uses technology to get kids moving.
Wendy Starwalt, a physical education teacher at Carrie Busey Elementary in Savoy, will give a presentation Friday at Michelle Obama's second Let's Move in School Showcase.

CHAMPAIGN — A national program that promotes youth fitness is changing to emphasize health over performance — and materials published by Champaign-based Human Kinetics will be part of the new program.
The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition announced Monday it is replacing the President's Council Youth Fitness Test with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program.

CHAMPAIGN — The McKinley Fitness Center is planning a May 29 ribbon-cutting at the old McKinley YMCA building — even though the fitness center has been operating since March 15.
"It's like our grand opening," said Donna Wright, a former YMCA employee who has been volunteering her time to the new fitness center. "We're ready to say, 'We can do this now. We're here to stay.'"
