Updated: Carle gets state OK to expand emergency department

BOLINGBROOK — Carle Foundation Hospital has received permission from state regulators to expand and remodel its 30-year-old emergency department.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the $18.5 million project Tuesday.

Help available for Medicare Part D

URBANA — Help with Medicare Part D enrollment will be available for the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.

A Medicare Part D community meeting and enrollment event will be held in the hospital auditorium at 1400 W. Park St., U, starting at 10 a.m., with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. for registration.

Thousands of patients are being notified this week by hospitals and medical offices in central Illinois that they received injectable drugs purchased from the same compounding pharmacy linked to the multi-state fungal meningitis outbreak.

Nursing home board OKs rate increase

URBANA — Private pay rates at the Champaign County Nursing Home will increase 5 percent on Dec. 1, the nursing home board of directors voted Monday.

The across-the-board rate hike is needed to make up for increases in expenses and for cuts in Medicaid funding, nursing home manager Scott Gima said.

Champaign woman lost stepdaughter in meningitis outbreak

CHAMPAIGN — Carol Bergeson had more than a beloved stepdaughter.

She had a soul mate, she says.

But a contaminated steroid drug that has set off a multistate fungal meningitis outbreak ended the life of Bergeson's 56-year-old stepdaughter, Diana Reed, on Oct. 3.
